When developing stories for the Weekly Tagline and Hooked On Crane Tech blog, we rely on our field-experienced trainers to help bring relevant content to our readers. We are constantly asking them, “What issues are you seeing at client locations?…What topic are you passionate about?…What do you think the industry needs more education about?”
Recently, one of our instructors responded, “one of my concerns is with the use of an inaccurate LMI–reminding operators to pull a tape on load radius and boom length to verify load information.” This response led to a discussion about Load Moment Indicators (LMI) and how during pre-operational checks, the operator is supposed to verify the LMI…but instructions are usually vague on how to actually do this, if they exist at all within the manual. And so the article The Best Start to a Safe Day – LMI Verification was born.
Instructor Credentials
This is all well and good, but why does that make a difference to Crane Tech clients or your operations? This is just a little example of why the credentials of instructors are important. Having first-hand knowledge of a subject can make the difference when instructing adult learners. “Been there, done that” is not meant to be an attitude but to provide a level of understanding of what operators and inspectors are facing on a daily basis in the field. It is a much different perspective than that of someone who has training or management experience but has never operated out in the trenches. Just another item to consider when hiring a company to provide training services and/or selecting an individual to become the trainer for your organization.
The great news is that we received positive feedback on this article and even had one customer request a version they could print and send to all of their operators. We were happy to comply and were thrilled when we received a request from a leading publication within the crane industry, Crane Hotline, asking if they could share this topic with their readers as well. So now you can find this Crane Tech content in the August 2016 edition of Crane Hotline.
This is just another example of how Safety thorough Education is more than just our motto, it is or guiding principle.
